MIDAS

Manufacturers of textured cementitious coatings, textured and other coatings, retailed through 54 boutique-style franchised concept stores.

Midas Earthcote has long established relationships with the contractor market, particularly in the Western Cape – a position that complements Freeworld Coatings larger presence in the DIY and retail market. The acquisition of Midas Earthcote in 2006 brought together the “value for money” Midas branded coatings, its ability to develop specialist products for the building trade and an intimate knowledge of the contracting industry. The Earthcote brand offers a range of boutique style coatings developed for the high end decorator and architect market. Midas Earthcote has initiated an enterprise development project in the Western Cape, comprising partnerships with contractors from previously disadvantaged communities. International Colour Corporation

ICC (International Colour Corporation) Colourant Systems produces and supplies colourant systems throughout Southern Africa, and exports them to an increasing number of global paint companies.

Colourants are primarily used at point of sale in retail stores. These systems allow exact matching of the colours requested by paint shoppers. The formulations are critical to the process, driven by state of the art computer systems. Innovation allows for changes to the formulations by complete data link-ups so that any cutting edge innovations can be downloaded and updated within minutes.

HAMILTON BRUSH

A premium manufacturer of paint brushes, paint rollers and associated products, marketed to commercial enterprises and the DIY market under the Hamilton Brush brand. The acquisition of Hamilton Brush in 2004 brought a high quality range of complementary products into Freeworld Coatings, creating potential for considerable synergies. These include the consolidation of research and distribution and transfer of technical and marketing know-how and best practices across traditional industry lines. Hamilton Brush also distributes 3M products – eg. coated abrasives and adhesive tape – and Energiser batteries and torches to hardware distributors. These products, manufactured abroad and imported to South Africa, brought additional value to the acquisition. Hamilton’s well-developed distribution structure, using agents who buy its products then sell them on to the market, was a further benefit, as were the distribution channels that share common promotional needs and support.
